![]() I think there is a message here for Apple - when it comes to music, it still faces considerable competition. From other streaming services and other output devices. It's certainly one area where Apple doesn't own the top end (at the least its competing with Sonos for that).Īnyway, even for a fanboy like myself, it's good to see there is more competition coming through into an area that Apple essentially owned 10 years ago. I never paid much attention to the Chromecast stuff. Is there any option to stream to these from the desktop? Like a dedicated iTunes-like app that can stream to these? It sounds like this is very phone/tablet-centric. ![]() You can stream from the Chrome web browser on sites like Google Music. ![]() I'm not aware of any dedicated Windows apps though. That would be a good thing for people to request from respective manufacturers. There shouldn't be any reason the desktop apps from Spotify or Pandora couldn't trigger a stream just like their Android counterparts do now. There is no Windows/OS X SDK for Chromecast. I'm saving my pennies for a pair of these: Works pretty well with Spotify Premium, although Spotify's web player is less than optimal. So not sure why the down vote? There really is no SDK for Windows or OS X. Only Chrome, Android and iOS: ĭoes anyone else find that they have a disproportionate amount of trouble using Spotify with Chromecast? Often Spotify takes a long time to setup the Chromecast stream, or fails entirely. I don't have that problem with other apps such as Google Audio or Downcast. I'm definitely sticking with Chromecast, but it's got much more friction than Sonos. Even if Spotify weren't glitchy, it takes about 4 interactions on my iPhone to get the audio going through Chromecast. I don't have this issue, and Spotify is my primary source.Ī geeky solution would be for Spotify to have a quick action for chromecasting or a URL scheme that would allow me to create a Workflow App to chromecast my main playlist.Ī more mainstream solution, and I have to believe this is coming, is for Google to release an Amazon Echo like controller. I've got two Airport Express's and a Yamaha reciever with built in AirPlay.Make sure you chromecasts are updated to the latest rev, and Spotify too. Sending music from my iPhone to AirPlay speakers is the only way I listen to music anymore. Currently you can only do this from a computer as it's unavailable from an iOS device, but you can use an iOS device to run Remote and then control a Mac to send music to multiple AirPlay speakers. On the other hand, AirPlay allows multiple speakers to play simultaneously. The plus with the bluetooth solution is it's Android friendly and they implemented a speakerphone function, which I'll admit is pretty cool. Kilpsch has a similar line, that use to have Airplay and now only bluetooth. I'm not sure how much Apple gets for the licencing, but it means some speaker manufactures are implementing bluetooth only solutions. This capability is part of the premium price you paid. Simply select the speakers from your Mac or iOS device and it plays. My understanding is that one of the major features of the SoundTouch line is that they have AirPlay built in.
